Dhaka Medical College (DMC) is one of the oldest medical institutions in this part of Asia region. The institution stated its glorious journey on the 10th of July, 1946. The Department of Gastroenterology is one of the oldest and remarkable departments among 42 departments of DMC.

Departmental Setup

The department is enriched with the posts of 4 professors, 2 Associate Professors, 3 Assistant Professors (currently 2 vacant), one Registrar, 2 Assistant Registrars, one Outdoor Medical Officer, 8 IMOs and one MLSS.

Academic Activities

The department deals with the course for MBBS 4th year students followed by the Final Professional Examination at the end of the course through a revision part (Block Posting). The departments conducts Postgraduate course in MD/FCPS (Gastroenterology)-Final part, MD (Residency Course)-Both Phase-A & B, and FCPS (Internal medicine)-Course program.

Teaching Activities

The learning objectives of the department are to enable the students to diagnose and manage patients. The department offers 14 hour-lectures for 4th year students. They are placed in 2nd round for 1wk. Through ward placement in morning and evening classes, bed side teaching, demonstration and tutorial classes in clinical ward duties students become able to approach a patient, history taking, general and systematic examinations followed by review. Students are introduced with clinical skills and procedures, long and short case discussions. Morning session starts from 8:30am to 9:30am.

Besides, Postgraduate training is offered as a part of FCPS/MD course. Weekly Journal presentation is held every Tuesday. Case discussion is held every Saturday and Wednesday. Lecture and tutorial are conducted for Postgraduate students and 5th year MBBS students. Clinical class is taken for Postgraduate students. Active participation and case presentation in central presentation session are also held every Sunday.

Clinical Services

The Department of Gastroenterology provides a number of clinical services. These are Outdoor service, Indoor service, and IBD Clinic-every Monday.

Diagnostic and Therapeutic Facilities

The department has a good number of diagnostic and therapeutic facilities for patients. These are: 1. Upper GI endoscopy-Diagnostic & Therapeutic, 2. Colonoscopy-Diagnostic & therapeutic, 3. ERCP, 4. Endoscopic Ultrasound, 5. Double Balloon Enteroscopy, and 6. Confocal Endomicroscopy.

Research Activities

The department conducts research on Gastroenterology as a part of postgraduate MD/FCPS (Gastroen-terology) -Final part course curriculum. Besides, it has collaboration with national and international organization, like ROME Foundation- Research on Functional Gastroin-testinal Disorders, British Society of Gastroenterology, ICDDRB, and Bangladesh Gastroenterology Society for conducting various research works related to Gastroenterology.

Scientific programs

The department deals with various scientific programs and activities. Some of them are interventions as well as procedure related. These are: Basic Skill Training program on Diagnostic and Therapeutic Upper GI Endoscopy; Basic Skill Training program on Diagnostic and Therapeutic Colonoscopy; ERCP; Workshop on New modalities of intervention: Cholangioscopy; Advanced therapeutic intervention: SMR/EMR. And some of them are disease related. These are: Scientific program/Workshop on management of different Gastrointestinal Disorders: IBD, Hepatitis c.

Side by side this the Department of Gastroenterology also has the active participation in various national and international scientific conference, seminar, symposium and workshop.

Profile of Prof. Ahmed

Dr. Faruque Ahmed is now working as Professor and Head of the Department of Gastroenterology of DMC. He passed MBBS in 1987 from Chittagong Medical College with 2nd position in Final MBBS examination. He received FCPS in Medicine from BCPS in 1993 and MD Gastroenterology from DU in 1998.

He was also awarded honorary FRCP from the Royal College of Physician, Edinburgh, UK. He received Gold Medal from World Gastroenterology Organization and also received best award for health services in Bangladesh. He played a key and pioneer role in all aspects of development and improvement of GI specialty in Bangladesh.

He is also the chief organizer of different training workshops in collaboration with India, Singapore and UK. Use of animal model for GI endoscopy training was introduced for the first time in Bangladesh by his endeavor. He is actively involved in research in GI field locally and also in collaboration with different institutions and organization at home and abroad.

Prof. Ahmed has got the experience of guiding vast number of MD Thesis, One PhD Thesis. He is also an overseas PhD Thesis examiner in different Universities of India. He is now acting as Project Director of National Institute of Digestive Diseases Research & Hospital, Dhaka, which is now at the final stage of completion.
